The method that the World Bank uses to calculate severe income poverty—its global extent, distribution in space, and trend over time—is seriously flawed, according to philosopher Thomas Pogge and development economist Sanjay Reddy.

In this 8/16/02 paper, they propose an alternative method, linked more explicitly to the basic requirements of human beings.
